POHDCC: Season Two

Welcome to another season of POHDCC. We're very excited to kick off the semester with a full slate of talks to be presented by our parent organization OHDCC, and a new show called POHDCC: Round Table featuring this season's hosts Warren Kimmel, Whitney Cook, and Paul Hanvongse, and a rotating roster of guests. (Yes, Carl and Serena will be among them).

The Round Table is a work in progress-- sort of a panel discussion over pizza and adult beverages. We're going to continue to bridge the gap between the classroom and the boardroom by attempting to use our book smarts (and street smarts) to explore some real-world business issues.

Got any topics, business horror stories or questions you'd like us to tackle? Drop us a line at POHDCC@gmail.com and let us know. Who knows-- maybe you'll wind up as a guest on the Round Table!

We're still here.

Even though the spring semester has ended, POHDCC is not going on a break-- yet. We still have plenty of material queued up for release, including the recent talk given to OHDCC by Dr. W. Warner Burke.

We'll miss Carl, who is leaving us to go on to greener pastures (a.k.a. Houston). Rest assured, though, that we're already looking at building a team for the fall season who will be able to expand upon what we've created and take the podcast to that 'next level' that everybody talks about. We'll have a bunch of new original content, new OHDCC talks to share, and who knows what else.

Speaking of the new team-- if you are an incoming TC student and think you might be interested in becoming part of Team POHDCC, feel free to drop myself and Serena a line at POHDCC@gmail.com, and let's talk. Don't worry about your skill and prowess in podcasting. We'll train you.

Finals are almost over.

Yes, we know-- it's been well over a week since The Apprentice finale, and we haven't put an episode up yet. We have no excuse. Except for finals. And papers. And the SIOP conference. And more finals. Also a paper. Did we mention that we'll have some interesting post-SIOP podcast material in the future?

Stay tuned for our Apprentice finale wrapup, featuring a surprise guest from OHDCC (it was a surprise even to him!). Also, stay tuned for an interview that our own Serena Shulman conducted with Dr. Michael Bazigos regarding his thoughts on The Apprentice.

We'll release all of the good stuff soon. I promise.

Thanks for your patience,

Warren

Once again Whitney Cook saved the day, filling in for Serena (who's feeling much better now, thank you!).

There's a lot for us to talk about this week. Nicole is sent to Kinetic, and swears revenge against her former teammates. Tim is torn between keeping the trust of his team and repairing his temporarily estranged relationship with Nicole. Arrow and Kinetic participate in a sales task on the same turf using very opposite approaches. Kinetic claims the ethical high ground, but loses the task.

We raised a couple of questions on the podcast, and would love to hear your thoughts:

1. Do you think James made the best choice in sending Nicole over to Team Kinetic?

2. Have you been the newcomer to an established group, or had to transition a newcomer into an established group? At what point did you feel like part of the group, or feel like the newcomer was part of the group? Tell us your story!

3. Kinetic took what they perceived to be the ethical "high ground" during the sales tasks, while Arrow's hardball tactics were much more effective. What would you have done?

Later this week: Our interview with Apprentice candidate Derek Arteta, an OHDCC discussion led by TC alum Adam Vane, and a talk by Professor David Buckner on cultural integration in organizations.

As always, thanks for listening!

Episode 9 is available for download!

Hi all,

We hope you enjoy listening to Episode 9 as much as we enjoyed recording it!

One correction (among many, I'm sure): I keep talking about the "Dual Factor Model." What I was actually referring to was Pruitt and Rubin's dual concern model, which is a useful tool to identify the various styles that people use when resolving conflicts.

During the episode, we touched on an issue that was highlighted as a result of the conflict between Muna and Kristine-- how do you best accomodate religious beliefs in the workplace? We'd love to get your thoughts and hear about your experiences-- please feel free to leave a comment!

Let's Talk !!!

I don't know about you, but all this talk on the POHDCC PodCast - just seems to beg for more conversation! Carl, Warren and Serena have whet our whistles with tidbits on various hypotheses and theories, but we'd like to go further! Right? Right!!

So...we are opening up this blog for some greater conversation.

Our first topic will be about leadership. Gulp... that's a biggie isn't it? Any of us who have taken Warner Burke's class know that it takes a least 8 weeks just to cover where we've been and get caught up to the present on this topic. However we also know that leadership is a fascinating topic - for a reason. It's just so darn important!

A couple of questions to get us started...

It seems like the recent project leaders on The Apprentice have had a tough go of things (perhaps that's par for the course given the set up of the show). Even when they win - they don't win the hearts and minds of their teams (can you say Surya)?
So how come?

3 questions to ponder:

Is Surya failing to inspire because he has the wrong style for the situation (a la Fiedler)?

Or is the team unwilling to be led by Surya for other reasons, perhaps related to something like Bion's Basic Assumptions (related to group dynamics)?

What other theories or hypotheses are out there to consider?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, opinions and ideas. There is no "right" answer - but it sure is fun to hear what others think!

What would you like to talk about?

POHDCC was created to serve the community of Organizational Psychology students at Teachers College, and to connect with other interested schools, programs, and people. What topics interest you? What would you like us to cover? Do you strongly disagree with a point we've made on one of our episodes? Would you like to leave us some glowing feedback? We'd love to hear from you!

If you've got a burning topic, send us an email at pohdcc@gmail.com and we'll post it to the blog so that others can put their two cents in.

Thanks,

Welcome to POHDCC!

Welcome to POHDCC - the official podcast of the Organizational and Human Development Consulting Club at Teachers College, Columbia University. In case you're wondering, Serena and I are in the library writing this entry, and since Carl is nowhere to be seen, we figured this would be a perfect time to make an introduction. (So, Serena - what do you really think about Carl?)

As you can see, we're grad students. That means we like to to talk a lot. To remedy our need to give our 2 cents (Carl gives his in pence), we began a podcast dealing with issues of organizational dynamics, group behavior, leadership... the grease in the wheels of industry.

Now we're tackling the most famous job interview, The Apprentice: Los Angeles. We apply what we're learning to these very real task scenarios, while trying really, really hard to maintain an air of professionalism--well, we have fun, anyway.

We also interview leaders in the military, academic, and corporate sectors. Through our parent organization, OHDCC, we've hosted a couple of excellent speakers including Matt Baker and Michael Dick, students from the Eisenhower Leader Development Program here at TC. We've also had guests such as Yaron Prywes, author of "The Nature of Leadership," and Vito Pandolfo, principal consultant and founder of Lead Smarter Associates, a remarkably successful executive coaching firm here in NYC.

We hope you enjoy the podcast, and we want to hear from you--whether you're a future leader, a student like us, or just stumbled upon this site when you were looking to order from Domino's.

Feel free to post comments, or drop us a line at POHDCC@gmail.com.

Warren & Serena (and Carl, our very own Mr. Trump)
